Will Noons and Thomson meet in the future?

Josh Thomson walked away with a relatively easy win when he took the Strikeforce lightweight title away from Gilbert Melendez last week. A couple weeks before, KJ Noons did not even need a full minute to defend his EliteXC 160 pound championship title against Yves Edwards. So what would be the next logical step? Find a more formidable opponent for each fighter.

While each organization sets out on a quest to find that opponent, another possibility is starting to build some momentum. The possibility of a Noons-Thomson bout is starting to leak from more than a few sets of lips. It could be billed as title unification bout and would likely generate quite a bit of interest. Nevertheless, how is it that neither Strikeforce or EliteXC can scour through the hotbed of talent in the world of mixed martial arts and come up with a worthy challenger within their own organizations?

A bout featuring fighters from each organization might suggest that there isn’t just enough talent within the EliteXC or Strikeforce. Furthermore, what would each organization do as a follow up to the fight? And how would one organization look if its fighter was dominated? For both the EliteXC and Strikeforce, these questions may be better off left unanswered. Damon Martin of mmaweekly goes on to explore this subject in a broader scope.
