Forrest Griffin is now the man to beat in what has turned into the toughest division in mixed martial arts today. There is now a long line of top contenders in the light heavyweight division. Most weekly rankings continue to rank those light heavyweights from top to bottom. We took a different approach and ranked the top ten light heavyweight fighters with the best chance of taking the title away from Forrest Griffin as things stand right now.
10. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
The African Assassin’s biggest win came against Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera last year. However, his momentum slowed when Lyoto Machida stopped him in the second round at UFC 79. Sokoudjou is slowly regaining that momentum and the better Machida does in his fights, the better it bodes for Sokoudjou. He is still an up and comer and will have to win a few more fights while some other top contenders must lose before he could even contemplate getting a shot at the title.
9. Dan Henderson
There’s no denying Henderson’s prowess in the cage, although he’ll have to rack up some UFC victories before he can get a shot at gold. Thus far, Henderson is 0-2 in the octagon, albeit against some very formidable opponents in Quinton Jackson and Anderson Silva. His next fight will come against Rousimar Palhares at UFC 88. Henderson will have to win that fight and step up in class before he can be considered as a title contender. For now, Henderson must erase the memory of his past two losses.
8. Mauricio Rua
While Rua is one of the top light heavyweight fighters in the world, he is still trying to recover from a knee injury, never an easy task. He expects to be fighting again some time in December, however that is not etched in stone. Furthermore, Rua’s last fight was a defeat that came almost a year ago at the hands of Forrest Griffin. With all the top contenders in the division, Rua will need to get back in the octagon and notch a couple of victories. Currently, another Rua vs. Griffin match-up doesn’t have a whole lot of luster.
7. Keith Jardine
Okay, so the dean of mean was one of the few fighters that was able to beat Forrest Griffin. Nevertheless, Jardine lost his last fight in a mere 36 seconds to Wanderlei Silva. For that reason, we can’t move him past Silva on this list. But if Jardine can put together a couple of quality wins and Griffin holds onto the tile for a while, talks could surface regarding a possible revenge bout between the two. Let’s also not forget that Jardine earned a unanimous decision over Chuck Liddell back at UFC 76. Next up for Jardine is Brandon Vera at UFC 89, a must win.
6. Wanderlei Silva
Following three straight losses, Silva rolled over Keith Jardine in 36 seconds. Silva was scheduled to fight this past week at UFC Fight Night 14, but plans fell through and it was a no go. If Silva can roll over a couple more opponents the way he did Jardine, he could receive a title shot regardless of who has the belt. He is an exciting fighter and UFC fans are thirsting to see more of him.
5. Thiago Silva
Silva will not find himself ranked this high on most light heavyweight lists. However, Forrest Griffin wasn’t ranked as high before his previous victory over Quinton Jackson. Silva will experience a similar rise if he can defeat Lyoto Machida at UFC 89. A victory there might not earn him a title shot in his very next fight, but would definitely vault him up to the top. The longer he stays undefeated, the better a chance he has at the championship.
4. Quinton Jackson
Talks of a rematch with Griffin cannot begin to gain credence until Jackson finally gets his head on straight. Rampage’s personal problems have struck a tremendous blow to his fighting career. However, even when he returns to some sense of normalcy, he could immediately state his case for getting another shot at Griffin. Given his recent problems, Jackson may have to fight once and establish he is still the same fighter before he gets another shot at the crown. Either way, it will be difficult to deny Rampage a chance for redemption.
3. Rashad Evans
Standing in Evans’ way right now is the Iceman. If Evans can get past Chuck Liddell, he has a legitimate claim for a shot at the title. Evans has yet to lose a fight and a victory over Liddell would definitely elevate his status, whereas a loss would drop Evans back significantly in the race for the title. Evans may not be as marketable as Liddell, which proves all the more why he needs to stop the Iceman in an emphatic way.
2. Lyoto Machida
One of the most promising young stars in the light heavyweight division will carry an unblemished mark into his UFC 89 fight against Thiago Silva. A victory over Silva would give Machida six straight wins in the UFC with the last three coming against very formidable opponents. It might be hard to deny Machida a title shot if he disposes of Silva. Machida my have to wait in line behind Liddell, but could get his chance sooner than later if Evans winds up on top at UFC 88.
1. Chuck Liddell
If Liddell can get past Rashad Evans at UFC 88, he may be guaranteed to get a crack at Griffin. With Jackson seemingly on the shelf for a while, Liddell can get to the title without having to go through Rampage. Liddell has great market value and would be the prime candidate to take on Griffin. A win over Evans could very well seal the deal for a Griffin vs. Liddell match-up.
