UFC guilty of fraud on two counts

July 22nd, 2008

During this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 14, the UFC was guilty of putting on a couple of fights that were nothing more than a fraud. First off, the Brandon Vera vs. Reese Andy match proved that was unworthy of being on the main card, let alone second to the main event. Prior to the fight, Vera shot off at the mouth about how he was robbed in his last fight in the heavyweight division. Furthermore, he went on to say how many great things he’ll do in the light heavyweight division.

Both of those statements already seem to be a fraud. His hug-fest against Reese Andy drew boo after boo as Vera seemed so spent, he could barely last the three rounds. And Andyy was no better, but did anyone really expect him to be?

So what lies ahead for “the truth”? A class of light heavyweights that won’t be content with hugging him for fifteen minutes. If Vera hopes to make good on all the talk he dished out prior to the fight, he needs to work on his conditioning in a major way.

The second fraud of the night occurred when Kevin “Fire” Burns (horrible nickname) was awarded a victory over Anthony Johnson after he poked him in the eye. Johnson clearly dominated the fight, but couldn’t finish it after Burns put one in his eye. Moreover, Burns was warned repeatedly about his open hands to the face. Apparently, those warnings were nothing more than idle chatter.

Johnson should have been given the decision, yet he was stuck with a loss after taking the fight on such short notice. Johnson, however, shows a lot of promise and displayed the utmost integrity following the fight. And no one would raise a brow if Johnson appealed the decision.

During any event, there are always high moments and low moments. UFC Fight Night 14 experienced a pair of low moments with the Vera fight and the Johnson decision. Going up against Affliction’s pay-per-view event, these could be two noticeable black eyes for the UFC in its first ever clash with its new rival. This pair of frauds may fall by the wayside, although future frauds could have an impact on the UFC’s competition with Affliction. From now on, the fighters, judges and referees will all have to be on their toes and at their best as the competition between the two organizations will surely heat up.
