You know the old saying that if you fall off the horse, the best thing you can do is get right back on it again? Well, last night after having to suffer through that embarrassing pile of garbage EliteXC put on CBS, the MMA fanatic in me needed an injection of some decent MMA. PERFECT TIMING because the WEC event featuring a much anticipated featherweight title fight be Urijah Faber & Jens Pulver was tonight… and it was everything you could hope it would be.
Kenneth Alexander Vs. Rob McCullough
Result: McCullough wins via split boring decision
The frustrating thing about this fight was that you could see the technical abilities of both these guys. Very quick, very tight… when one would shoot, the other would fight it off or sprawl perfectly. And yet it was so slow with very few exchanges. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the feeling each other out process, respecting the abilities of your opponent and measuring your shots… but as Frank Mir pointed out, it didn’t feel like either of them were out there trying to WIN the fight. Clearly two good fighters, who just turned in a boring fight. It’s a sad thing when the most exciting moment of a fight was an accidental knee to the groin.
Seeing the camera trying its hardest to aviod showing Tito Ortiz (who was in the McCullough corner) on the screen was kinda funny. After the fight McCullough mentioned he can’t wait to get the belt back. Not getting any closer to a title shot with a performance like that.
Chuck Grigsby Vs. Mark Munoz
Result: Mark Munoaz wins via strikes in the first round
Gringsby showed some excellent take down defense early on, but when Munoz was finally able to take the 6′6 man to the matt and take Grigsby out of his game, he completely controlled the fight. Raining down punishment Grigsby ate a lot of strong strong punches eventually forcing the ref to jump in a stop the fight.
Munoz looked great… but he looked uncomfortable on his feet, and I can’t help but wonder how he would have done if Grigsby has a better ground game.
Donald Cerrone Vs. Danny Castillo
Result: Donald Cerrone wins via Arm Bar in the first round
A battle between 2 undefeated lightweights. First of all, before the fight started the banner hanging on the cage behind Cerrone had a logo on it that had me HOWLING! It was for a website called “Jesus Didn’t Tap.Com”. Sure enough, a christian MMA site. Anyway, the fight ended quick as Cerrone nearly had a triangle, but when that didn’t instantly work he quickly applied a great arm bar. Kudow to Castilo for trying to fight it off, but it was just in too deep and he was forced to verbally tap.
Yoshiro Maeda Vs. Miguel Angel Torres (Champion) Bantam Weight Title Match
Result: Torres wins via doctor stoppage due to injury at the end of the third round
Good grief what a fantastic fight! The first two rounds were so entertaining and exciting. Back and forth these guys exchanged various combinations, resulting in an incredible moment when the two were on the ground and both had ankle locks applied for a good 30 seconds and neither one would tap. As they got into the third round Torres began to take control and Maeda’s eye began to swell up until it completely closed. Torres took advantage of this and landed jab after jab on the eye. When the third round ended, the doctor said Maeda couldn’t continue like that and stopped the fight. This was one hell of a fight. ANYWHERE these two rematck, I’ll fly to see.
Urijah Faber (Champion) Vs. Jens Pulver Featherweight Title Match
Result: Faber wins via unanimous decision
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I’ve been looking forward to this fight and it delivered everything it promised to be. Many expected Faber to push the action and try to take it to the ground as quickly as he could and as often as he could, however he looked more than comfortable standing with Pulver and trade some fantastic exchanges. The second round was one of the best I’ve seen in a while as it looked like Faber was moments away from knocking Pulver out… only to have Pulver miraculously recover and put Faber in real danger. Faber won each round, but each round was very close. Pulver is a beast… taking some serious shots only to come back seemingly unfazed and dish out a cup of pain of his own. This Faber kid is insane gifted… what a fight!
OVERALL
The card started off with a lackluster Kenneth Alexander Vs. Rob McCullough fight, but the card picked up pace and quality as it went on. It ended up being a great card. Exactly what an MMA fan needed after watching that garbage EliteCX nonsense last night.
