In the Gym with Marcus Hicks

July 8th, 2008

With all the hubbub that followed this weekend’s UFC 86 card, not much attention has been paid to the WEC. In less than a month, the organization will follow up it’s last stellar television event with WEC 35 taking place in Las Vegas. The August 3rd card will be headlined by a Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura Welterweight championship bout.

The WEC Lightweight title will also be on the line when Jamie Varner steps into the cage to defend his belt against Marcus Hicks. This might turn out to be the most competitive and entertaining bout of the night. Hicks brings a perfect 8-0 record into the fight and will be looking for his fourth straight win in the WEC. All three of Hicks’ previous wins came by a submission on a guillotine choke.

Here’s a glimpse into a typical day in the life of Marcus Hicks. Stay tuned for part two of this feature tomorrow.

Complete Fight Card set for WEC 35

July 4th, 2008

The entire fight card has finally been released for WEC 35 which will take place on August 3rd at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. The event will air for free on Versus and hopes to capitalize on the tremendous reception received after WEC’s last television event. Back on July 1st during WEC 34, Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver put on a dazzling display in five full rounds of hard hitting action.

Not only did they fight bode well for the WEC, but it also helped out the world of mixed martial arts. One day prior to the event, the EliteXC gave mma a black eye in front of the entire country when it aired Kimbo Slice’s over-hyped network television debut. Now, the WEC has lined up a card that will try to follow up on the momentum generated by WEC 34.

Carlos Condit and Hiromitsu Miura will headline the event in a battle for the WEC welterweight title. The lightweight title will also be on the line when Jamie Varner takes on Marcus Hicks. And a Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell showdown rounds out the championship bouts in a duel for the light heavyweight championship. Here’s a more in depth look at the fight card with a tale of the tape provided by wec.tv.
