A tale of two states

July 2nd, 2008

Nowadays, more and more states are taking on different approaches towards sanctioning mixed martial arts events. But while more states are leaning toward advocating mma’s advancement, others are not as hasty to set up a cage in their backyard. Tennessee is the latest state to line up in an effort to bring organizations like the UFC into their state. Tennessee state just passed legislation that will sanction the sport of mixed martial arts.

This news comes much to the chagrin of Memphis native Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as he may one day fight in front of his hometown crowd. In addition to Memphis, Nashville is also another prime spot that figures to be targeted by various mma organizations. But not all states are as welcoming as the Volunteer state.

Delaware State Representative Robert J. Valihura Jr recently proposed legislation that would ban “combative fighting” altogether in the state. The bill is known as House Bill 501 but is also widely recognized as “Toughman Legislation”.

Delaware is better known as the first state, although it’s archaic approach to mixed martial arts seems to date back to thinking that was prevalent when the state was founded. In a state where the mandatory closing time for bars is 1 am, pay per-view events that run late might not be seen in its entirety if the audience is watching from an establishment that serves alcohol.

Many times, people squawk at the south for being a little behind its Yankee brethren. In this case, the state of Delaware should travel south of the Mason-Dixon line and take a lesson from the good people of Tennessee.
