Smackgirl getting the smackdown
The scheduled July 24th all-women’s mma event entitled “SmackGirl” won’t be taking place any time soon. Financial problems have pushed the estrogen-fueled event back to a tentative date of September 21st according to reports from Sherdog.com. Evidently, television contract disputes have contributed to the monetary problems surrounding the event.
Women have yet to really get a foothold in the world of mixed martial arts. And it isn’t just here in the states. As seen with the SmackGirl problems, it seems to be a worldwide problem. Women are certainly having their fill of problems fitting in to the mma mainstream.
While women’s mma may still be viewed as novelty, it doesn’t help matters that the UFC is reluctant to include females in its roladex. Until that happens, events such as this one will struggle to get off the ground.
