In the blood spattered cage, the women turned in another excellent performance last night. Christianne Cyborg made her return to the cage with a fierce display of fighting in her second round knockout of Shayna Baszler. The bout kicked off the free network television broadcast and set the tone for a night of hard-hitting action in the EliteXC. In case you missed it, here’s another look at Baszler vs. Cyborg.
EliteXC women are another smashing success

The women impressed yet again at last night’s EliteXC presentation of Unfinished Business. Christiane Cyborg returned to the mma circuit after a two year lay-off, but proved that she had remained busy in the interim. Cyborg came out and immediately went right after the favored Shayna Baszler. Baszler hung on and showed a game effort, but Cyborg was just too much.
Built like a tank, Cyborg took the action right to Baszler and brought the crowd to its feet. She disposed of Baszler via a knockout that came as the second round was winding down. This is the second time in a row that a women’s bout has been a smashing success at an EliteXC event. The most recognizable face in women’s mma, Gina Carano, was on hand to take in the action and stated that she is ready to challenge Cyborg in the future.
A Cyborg-Carano affair would build on the momentum quickly being built by the women in EliteXC. It is not merely a novelty anymore, but rather a compelling and throughly entertaining part of mma. Even though Baszler was overpowered, she reverted to her excellent ground game aand continually tried to hook in a submission.
It was an excellent fight and should pave the way for a future clash between Carano and Cyborg. These female fighters are exciting to watch and, with the addition of quality fighters like Cyborg, the field should only get stronger.
Christiane Santos looking for a win

Christiane “Cyborg” Santos does not see herself as an underdog heading into this weekend’s EliteXC showdown with Shayna Baszler. Santos hasn’t fought in a couple of years, but she claims that is only because there has been a lack of opponents. Nevertheless, Santos has taken part in some recent wrestling championships to maintain her game.
Hailing from Brazil, Santos is billed as one of the most feared female fighters in her country. She has trained alongside such noteworthy fighters as Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio Rua and is also married to long time Pride veteran Evangelista Santos. It appears that the EliteXC may have the making of another high caliber female fight this weekend.
Another excellent effort from the females would help establish a niche for the EliteXC in that it is the only major organization to feature women’s bouts. Baszler may be the betting favorite, but Santos is coming in expecting to win. Sherdog.com has more on the female Cyborg.
A look at a dangerous Shayna Baszler

Shayna Baszler has recently been added to EliteXC’s upcoming July 26th fight card. Baszler will enter the fight as the favorite against the less experienced Christiane Cyborg. In the following footage, Baszler shows why she will head in as the favorite. She does an excellent job working from her back to apply a deadly kimura that injures her opponent Samantha Gavere.
EliteXC has had recent success featuring a battle between women. As evidenced in this clip, Baszler has the capability of capitalizing on that recent success.
Girls fighting Girls

Yesterday, EliteXC announced its full fight card for the July 26th event which will air on network television. The most noteworthy and perhaps intriguing addition comes in the form of a women’s bout. Shayna Baszler and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will meet each other in a battle of 140 pounders. The addition is a smart one for the EliteXC as it carves out another fight in the unique niche it is bringing to the world of mma.
Girls fighting girls will always be a draw no matter what the venue. Although the rest of the EliteXC card is a rather ho-hum assemblage of fighters, most spectators will be intrigued with the Baszler-Santos bout. Baszler boasts a career record of 9-4 with all nine of those victories coming via a first round round submission. Santos is a bit more green with a professional record of only 4-0.
The EliteXC has indeed brought something different to the world of mma by putting women in the spotlight. And, on July 26, the organization will shine the lights down upon the women once again.
