Wilson Reis still needs some work

July 27th, 2008

Prior to his featherweight match-up against Bryan Caraway, Wilson Reis was talking about possible future match-ups against either Urijah Faber or Kid Yamomoto. While Reis improved to 5-0 with a unanimous decision over Caraway, he may have revealed that he’s not quite ready for a date with the top featherweights in the world.

Caraway toughed through the fight with a dislocated knee cap that obviously had a negative effect upon him. Th e injury was sustained before the fight, yet Caraway braved through the pain and did not pull himself from the card.

Reis scrambled to take the fight to the ground through all three rounds. He pretty much dominated on the ground, however he was bested by Caraway when the two were on their feet. In fact, a second round knee from Caraway dazed Reis even though he was able to recover. Such a mistake against Faber or Yamomoto could wind up being irrevocable.

To compete with either of those two, Reis needs to improve his stand up game. Taking Faber or Yamomoto to the ground won’t be as easy as it was against Caraway. That doesn’t necessarily mean that Reis cannot still rise through the ranks of the featherweight division. But before he starts calling out Faber or Yamomoto, he’ll have to do a little more than beat a guy with one leg.
