    Anthony Johnson undergoes eye surgery

    Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Laser surgery was needed to repair a damaged retina in the right eye of Anthony Johnson. The two-hour procedure went off without a hitch and Johnson hopes to fight again as early as September. But surgery was not only needed to repair Johnson’s eye. Surgery should also be used to suture the ill-advised decision in which Johnson suffered a loss that stemmed from being poked in the eye.

The decision to award the bout to a very lethargic Kevin Burns may have been one of the worst of the year in the UFC. Burns was losing the entire fight and accidentally caught Johnson with a finger to the eye as the third round was winding down. Johnson could not continue. Then, a stunned crowd responded with boos when Burns’ hand was raised in the air.

Nevertheless, Johnson holds no grudge against Burns but has no plans to fight him again. Burns was warned several times about his open hands, but claimed that was his fighting style. Johnson adds his thoughts in this interview with MMA Weekly.

UFC guilty of fraud on two counts

    Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

During this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 14, the UFC was guilty of putting on a couple of fights that were nothing more than a fraud. First off, the Brandon Vera vs. Reese Andy match proved that was unworthy of being on the main card, let alone second to the main event. Prior to the fight, Vera shot off at the mouth about how he was robbed in his last fight in the heavyweight division. Furthermore, he went on to say how many great things he’ll do in the light heavyweight division.

Both of those statements already seem to be a fraud. His hug-fest against Reese Andy drew boo after boo as Vera seemed so spent, he could barely last the three rounds. And Andyy was no better, but did anyone really expect him to be?

So what lies ahead for “the truth”? A class of light heavyweights that won’t be content with hugging him for fifteen minutes. If Vera hopes to make good on all the talk he dished out prior to the fight, he needs to work on his conditioning in a major way. (more…)

Anthony Johnson catches a bad one

    Monday, July 21st, 2008

One of the most controversial decisons during UFC Fight Night 14 came in a rather unusual manner. Anthony Johnson was well on his way to a seemingly unanimous decision over Kevin Burns. But with the fight waning down in the last couple minutes, Burns caught Johnson with as fierce poke to the eye.

It wasn’t the first time Burns had done such a thing, nor it wasn’t the first time he was warned. Johnson was sent flailing to the mat and could not continue. When the decision was announced everyone, including Burns himself, was shocked.

The crowd booed but being a true sportsman, Johnson urged them to turn the boos into cheers as he claimed to bear no ill will against Burns. However, Johnson still should have been awarded the victory. Fiveouncesofpain.com brings you all the details.

Anthony Johnson talks UFC Fight Night 14

    Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The UFC scrambled to put together UFC Fight Night 14 to coincide with Affliction’s debut event. Many of the fighters on this card weren’t given a whole lot of notice to prepare for their upcoming bouts. Anthony Johnson is among those fighters as he agreed to take on Kevin Burns. Johnson doesn’t mind scratching the UFC’s back by taking fights on such short notice. He has done it in the past and hopes that it will help his future. Johnson elaborates on this weekend’s fight in an interview with Mmarated.com.
