MMA continues to grow
With more interested eyes starting to focus on the sport of mixed martial arts, the pace of the sport is starting to accelerate. No longer is the UFC the only organization turning heads and no longer do fans have to settle for once a month events. Actually, there have always been mma events taking place, but never before did they demand such a grand spotlight. Now, week after week, mma cards are being broadcasted to the mass public.
Last week, fight fans were able to choose between UFC Fight Night 14 and Affliction: Banned. This week, EliteXC will put on a nationally televised program. The following weekend the WEC throws itself into the mix one week before the UFC returns with UFC 87. It’s quite a smorgasbord for fans of mixed martial arts.
If this trend continues, just about every weekend will include some sort of fight fest. As each organization tries to outdo one another, more programs will air and more fists will fly. And with the ever-growing popularity of the sport, there doesn’t appear to be a shortage of talent.
More college wrestlers are now dipping into the mma market right after their NCAA careers are finished. Thriving talent from all corners of the globe are also fighting their way into these mainstream organizations. Brazil continues to flood the mma circuit with talent while Japan has also contributed more than a few quality fighters.
Women are even getting into the act as the female division is gradually accumulating more talent and recognition. Part of the reason, many women fighters never delved deeper into the sport was due to a lack of demand. Now that the demand is higher, more female fighters are trying their luck in the cage.
The overall platform for mixed martial arts has broadened immensely over the past couple of years. A lull in the boxing circuit has also forced more people tune in to this sport as opposed just watching pugilists duel with only their hands. And as the momentum grows within the sport so should the audience. Both the supply and demand are expanding in every facet of the sport.
