Although Forrest Griffin may have come in to UFC 86 as an underdog, he quickly became the favorite shortly after the main event began. Griffin did not shy away from the Quinton Jackson and it didn’t take him long to take the fight to the light heavyweight champion. A peppering jab mixed in with some fierce leg kicks early in the second round set the tone after Jackson had ostensibly won round number one. And those early kicks wound up having a lasting effect on Jackson as the fight wore on.
However, being the true competitor that he is, Jackson fought back valiantly but Griffin always seemed to have an answer. And just when Jackson landed a few shots of his own, Griffin never seemed to let the fight turn in Rampage’s favor. It was if he had a calculated response for everything Jackson threw at him. And even though Jackson had been revered as the top light heavyweight in the world, it seemd as though Griffin was the superior fighter.
Jackson went on to last the entire five rounds and put in a game effort in what could be considered one of the top fights of the year in the UFC. Griffin was awarded the unanimous decision, albeit a close one. The fight ended with a bit of irony due to the fact that many critics, experts and fighters had already dubbed Jackson the winner before UFC 86 even began. But it is only in the octagon that a true statement can be made. On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Forrest Griffin showed up and made one of the biggest statements of the year.
