The latest IFL defectee to find some work has been L.C. Davis. The featherweight will compete this Sunday night at WEC 35 as he takes on Hiroyuki Takaya. Takaya was originally set to face Cub Swanson, although Swanson was forced to bow out after sustaining a broken hand while training. Now, Davis has stepped in and accepted the challenge on very short notice.

Davis is no pushover to say the least. He has accumulated a very impressive 10-1 record and boasted a 3-1 mark in the IFL with his only loss coming to the latest IFL featherweight champion Wagnney Fabiano. Davis is currently training under th tutelage of the well-known Pat Miletich who is based out of Davenport, Iowa.

Takaya holds a record of 9-5-1 with a loss in his only WEC appearance this past February. Takaya will have his hands full once again this Sunday night with another tough IFL veteran who has managed to find work now that his former employers went belly up.

A WEC veteran has managed to find a new home in the EliteXC. John “The Natural” Alessio has just signed a three fight deal with the organization. Alessio last fought on June 20th for Banner Promotions “Night of Combat”. Prior to that, he had six straight WEC fights with a UFC bout against Thiago Alves taking place right before those half-dozen fights.

Of course, Alessio was on the losing end of his fight with Alves, yet he still brings a lot of experience EliteXC. In fact, Alessio dropped all three of his fights that took place in the UFC. However, he did manage to piece together a 5-2 record in the very formidable WEC. The 29 year-old Alessio holds a current professional record of 23-11.

It has been rumored that Alessio may be starting to be groomed as a future challenger to current EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields. Fiveouncesofpain.com has more on this breaking story.

Here in the states, there seems to be some kind of mixed martial event available to watch every weekend from the comfort of your couch. Gone are the days of waiting for once-a-month events in which fighters do battle in the cage. EliteXC was just the latest mma organization to provide some action unto a nationwide audience. It may not rank among the most elite mixed martial arts organizations, but the ability to be able to rank these organizations shows that the mma movement is progressing.

The UFC still has a major foothold on most of the top fighters in the world. Therefore, it is and will likely remain the sport’s top organization. However, the fact that other fight leagues are beginning to push the UFC can only mean that the sports best will become even better. Currently, Affliction is attempting to offer some rather hefty payouts to lure some of the top fighters into its organization. Marcus Hicks will bring a perfect 10-0 record into Sunday night’s fight against Jamie Varner for the WEC lightweight championship. Hicks has run through three straight opponents since joining the WEC and now has his sights set on the title. His last fight against Ed Ratcliffe took a mere 1:42. The time is nearing for WEC to take center stage on the mma circuit. Next weekend, it will be the WEC’s turn to provide the mixed martial arts masses with a television event. During its last television event, the WEC scored big with big-time-back to back performances from Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres. This time around, the WEC is counting on Jamie Varner to be one of those fighters to turn in another stellar showing.

Varner will take on a tough challenger in Marcus Hicks at WEC 35 this Sunday evening. Although Varner is the reigning WEC lightweight champion, he still feels like an underdog. Varner blogs about being a constant underdog to mmaweekly.com, but doesn’t mind being classified as such. In fact, he is trying to use it to his advantage.

Varner will be one of three champions defending his title at WEC 35. Brian Stann will defend his light heavyweight belt while Carlos Condit will put his welterweight gold on the line. Varner is currently one of the rising young stars in the ever blossoming WEC. He’ll have an excellent opportunity to thrust his name deeper into the minds of fight fans this upcoming weekend as one of WEC 35’s headliners. It will also be another chance to prove that he is no underdog even if he comes into the fight thinking he is still not the favorite.

For WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann, fighting inside the cage is hardly what he would call a war. After serving two tours in Iraq, the marine can give a firsthand account of what real war looks like. In an interview with The Times Herald Record based in Hudson County, NY, Stann talks about his experiences on the front lines in Iraq.

Ironically, it was through the marines that Stann found his way into the world of mixed martial arts. He participated in the Marines mixed martial arts program which concentrated on jiu-jitsu and kick boxing. Stann agreed to his first fight back in January of 2006 where he scored a knockout. Five months later, he signed with the WEC via satellite phone from Iraq.

Stann’s active tour of duty in the Marines ended in May. Now, Stann not only carries with him the WEC light heavyweight championship, but he also carries a Silver Star, the nation’s third highest award for valor in combat, which he earned for his actions in May 2005 in Karabilah.

The WEC is definitely kicking it up another notch during its September 10th event which will take place in Orlando, Florida. The WEC recently filled out the car that will feature a Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown main event.

Jens Pulver returns to the cage, fresh off his recent beating which came courtesy of Faber. He’ll square off against Leonard Garcia who will be making his second WEC appearance. The middle of the week has crept up like an unsuspecting left hook. As the weekend approaches, it is the EliteXC who is ready to throw the punches. One of the WEC’s rising stars is light heavyweight champion and ex-marine Brian Stann. At WEC’s next event on August 3rd, Stann will defend his title against Steve Cantwell. It won’t be the first time these two square off as Stann knocked out Cantwell in less than a minute during their last contest. It seems odd that the WEC would schedule a rematch when Stann so throughly dominated Cantwell before. Nevertheless, here’s a replay of Stann’s previous demolition of Cantwell.

Every so often, talk surfaces of a possible match-up bvetween the boxer and the mixed martial artist. Well, it’s about that time again. This time, the proposed match-up is between Miguel Torres and Manny Pacquiao. Furthermore, this proposed match-up even has a venue. David Mayeda of www.fightticker.com contends that such a fight should take place in the Phillipines.

Mayeda goes on to explain why trhe Phillipines would work and why the match would be a success. But the bottom line that continually resurfaces it that a boxer shouldn’t be able to last one round with a top mixed martial artist. And Torres is just that.

Instead of shipping Torres off to a third world country to fight, why not push for a Urijah Faber vs. Torres showdown right here in the good old United States? A match-up such as that would surely turn into an extravaganza as two of the best fighters in the lighter weight classes would get the chance to square off.

Nevertheless, the boxer vs. the mixed martial artist argument will always arise. Perhaps it needs to be done so that the mma fighter can silence any future ruminations from recurring.
