Mixed martial arts took center stage last night in a not so little place called Teresopolis. The Brazilian municipality in Rio De Janeiro played host to Fury FC 6: High Voltage. In the main event event of the night, Rafael dos Anjos secured the light heavyweight championship as he edged out Takafumi Otsuka in a very close match.
The fight went to the scorecards and Anjos escaped with the split decision after struggling at times against Otsuka. Brazilian Thiago Alves got his start in Fury FC and Anjos may have been looking to follow in his footsteps. However, he’ll have to continue if he hopes to trace the same route the “Pitbull” took to the UFC.

This weekend, two home grown British mma organizations will go toe to toe. Cage Warriors is looking to becoming the leading mma organization in the UK as its rival Cage Rage has been rumored to be scaling down the size of its venues. Both organizations will present Saturday night events that will take place opposite one another.
Early on, it looks as though Cage Warriors may be leading the way. Its main event will feature a match-up between Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley and Bojan ‘Zelva’ Kosednar. Although they are not exactly household names across the globe, it may turn out a much more gripping main event than anything Cage Rage has to offer.

One of the most feared and successful heavyweights of the last decade has only known defeat once in his professional career. The scheduled July 24th all-women’s mma event entitled “SmackGirl” won’t be taking place any time soon. Financial problems have pushed the estrogen-fueled event back to a tentative date of September 21st according to reports from Sherdog.com. Evidently, television contract disputes have contributed to the monetary problems surrounding the event.
Women have yet to really get a foothold in the world of mixed martial arts. And it isn’t just here in the states. As seen with the SmackGirl problems, it seems to be a worldwide problem. Women are certainly having their fill of problems fitting in to the mma mainstream.
While women’s mma may still be viewed as novelty, it doesn’t help matters that the UFC is reluctant to include females in its roladex. Until that happens, events such as this one will struggle to get off the ground.

In the days leading up to UFC 86, there were whispers that the event didn’t seem to have the billing to live up to they hype. However, Saturday night’s card silenced those whispers. The Forrest Griffin vs. Rampage Jackson bout became an instant classic, but there were some other bouts that also enabled pay-per-viewers to get their money’s worth.
Patrick Cote improved to 14-4 with a split decision victory over Ricardo Almeida in what was probably the closest fight of the night. WEC Featherweight Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia just scored a victory even though he hasn’t fought since the middle of February. Garcia has been bothered by legal troubles stemming from what he claims to be a bad choice of friends. Garcia alleges that an associate got him into a bit of hot water with some felonious drug charges. But with all that behind him, Garcia is now ready to take on new challenges in the WEC Featherweight division.
Garcia is hopeful of landing a bout at WEC 36 on September 10. Garcia’s name had surfaced as a possible participant for WEC’s August 3 event, but that has not come to fruition. Furthermore, the Bad Boy is not the first fighter to have a run in with the law affect his mma career. Other fighters mimicked Garcia in the past with their urgent need to get back into the cage as soon as their incarceration and/or legal issues were behind them.
However, mixed martial arts may be the most difficult sport to take a break from. A fighter who trains day in and day out is not on the same plane as a fighter who’s training is interrupted by court dates and jail time. So before these “rehabilitated” criminals plea bargain for another chance inside the cage, perhaps they should first return to the rigorous training that originally go them there.
