Laser surgery was needed to repair a damaged retina in the right eye of Anthony Johnson. The two-hour procedure went off without a hitch and Johnson hopes to fight again as early as September. But surgery was not only needed to repair Johnson’s eye. Surgery should also be used to suture the ill-advised decision in which Johnson suffered a loss that stemmed from being poked in the eye.
The decision to award the bout to a very lethargic Kevin Burns may have been one of the worst of the year in the UFC. Burns was losing the entire fight and accidentally caught Johnson with a finger to the eye as the third round was winding down. Johnson could not continue. Then, a stunned crowd responded with boos when Burns’ hand was raised in the air.
Nevertheless, Johnson holds no grudge against Burns but has no plans to fight him again. Burns was warned several times about his open hands, but claimed that was his fighting style. Johnson adds his thoughts in this interview with MMA Weekly.

During a Thursday night appearance on MMA Weekly’s radio show, one of the best in the business stated that he is going anywhere. UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre still has two fights remaining on his current contract and admitted he doesn’t have plans to negotiate one anywhere else other than the UFC.
In the midst of these other uprisings from other mma organization, it will bode well for the UFC to not only keep GSP but to have him not even consider jumping ship. And in light of Affliction’s latest payouts, the UFC might have to offer St. Pierre some extra coin just for good measure.
One interesting twist to this saga is that Affliction is still GSP’s sponsor despite the UFC’s recent ban on its clothing line. He maintains that he still has a strong relationship with Affliction but would like to finsih out his fighting career in the UFC.

Now that the IFL has officially been sold and the mass exodus can now begin. However, that exodus does not just involve fighters, but corporate officers as well. Joe Favorito, Senior Vice President of Communications for IFL issued a statement yesterday indicating his dissolution with the company.
Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC, is the buyer responsible for claiming all the assets of the IFL. Zuffa will probably not continue the IFL, but will likely maintain all its assets.
Jim and Dan Miller already signed exclusive four-fight contracts with the UFC and more IFL veterans are expected to follow. It is quite probable that fighters such as Chris Horodecki and Jay Hieron will be among the other names to soon land a UFC contract.

Affliction didn’t pinch any pennies during its debut event as it shelled out bags of cash to its fighters. The payout was necessary to establish Affliction as a competitor, but how long can it keep affording these hefty payouts? Simple mathematics will say not for long. Tim Sylvia was grossly overpaid and Andrei Arlovski made over four times what he would have collected in the UFC.
Yet, it may have been a necessary evil to bring Affliction to the forefront of the mma world. The event turned out to be a success, but now the pay days could create a problem. Quality fighters looking to jump ship from the UFC could come to expect paychecks that are equally as high. That may bode well for the fighters, but could turn out to hurt Affliction in the long run.

Heading into his UFC 87 match-up against Jon Fitch, Georges St. Pierre is confident but not cocky. He feels as though he is a better fighter than Fitch in every facet of the game, although he didn’t hesitate to sing Fitch’s praises. The last time he entered a title defense with a cocky attitude, Matt Serra walked out with the belt.
That lesson appears to not only have humbled St. Pierre, but it has also made him a better fighter. His approach seems even more diligent in this interview with Times and Transcript.
GSP goes on to describe Fitch as being the new breed of mixed martial artist,s which means he is skilled in all different backgrounds. Rich Franklin will join in the extravaganza that is UFC 88 as he is set to take on Matt Hamill in a light heavyweight clash. It will be the first 205 pound fight for Franklin in more than three years. The last time Franklin entered the realm of the light heavies, he KO’d the legendary Ken Shamrock. Hamill will have a stiff test as only two fighters have ever bested Franklin.
Dan Henderson will also set foot in the octagon at UFC 88 when he squares off against Rousimar Palhares. Henderson is looking to get back on the winning track after two straight losses to Anderson Silva and Quinton Jackson. Palhares, a submission specialist, debuted with a win at UFC 84 and has an overall professional record of 8-1.
The last in this trio of new bouts showcases welterweight Karo Parisyan against Yoshiyuki Yoshida. Parisyan has won eight out off his last ten fights, however he was one of the most recent victims of Thiago Alves. Ironically, Alves and Diego Sanchez were the two men responsible for Parisyan’s last two defeats and it is those two who be featured in a more highly touted bout at UFC 90. As previously announced, Thiago Alves’ next bout will come against Diego Sanchez, although the date has changed. Originally set for UFC 89, the fight has been pushed back a week and will take place at UFC 90 in Chicago, Illinois.
Alves has been on a roll and will come into the fight not having lost in over two years. His name really catapulted up into the mainstream after he throughly dominated Matt Hughes back at UFC 85. Sanchez is looking to build upon his back-to-back wins which came on the heels of back-to-back losses, the only two of his career.
Mmajunkie.com goes on to report that an Anderson Silva title defense could also take place at UFC 90, assuming he still has the title. Actually, that may be a very safe assumption. Patrick Cote’s name keeps surfacing as a possible challenger.
