Affliction didn’t pinch any pennies during its debut event as it shelled out bags of cash to its fighters. The payout was necessary to establish Affliction as a competitor, but how long can it keep affording these hefty payouts? Simple mathematics will say not for long. Tim Sylvia was grossly overpaid and Andrei Arlovski made over four times what he would have collected in the UFC.

Yet, it may have been a necessary evil to bring Affliction to the forefront of the mma world. The event turned out to be a success, but now the pay days could create a problem. Quality fighters looking to jump ship from the UFC could come to expect paychecks that are equally as high. That may bode well for the fighters, but could turn out to hurt Affliction in the long run.

Randy Couture’s name keeps popping up as a possible opponent for Fedor Emelianenko. “The Natural” talked about the prospect of fighting Fedor and went on to explain how the UFC is not the only major player in mixed martial arts anymore. He claims that he would be content with if his career ended and he never fought again, yet he isn’t very convincing. It’s a safe bet that Couture hasn’t fought his last fight. It has been leaked that Affliction’s sophomore fight card will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event’s feature bout will showcase Fedor Emelianenko defending his World Association of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight championship belt against Andrei Arlovski. But despite having the event right in the middle of the UFC’s stomping grounds, the venue will not be quite the same. The Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus will play host to the event.

An unofficial announcement will not come until next Tuesday according to Affliction President Tom Atencio. For both Fedor and Arlovski, it will be their second straight Affliction bout. And judging by each man’s previous fight, the match-up should be much more competitive than Fedor’s annihilation of Tim Sylvia.

Arlovksi took part in the most enetertaining fight on the Banned fight card as he scored a knockout against Ben Rothwell. Kevin Lole of Yahoo Sports has more on this breaking story.

Early on, Affliction revealed that its debut event had sold out rather abruptly. Word then leaked indicating that story may have been a bit fabricated. Now, it is whispered that Affliction may have purchased 25 percent of this tickets themselves. So did the organization really make any money?

Fighter payouts climbed as high as $3 million and Affliction claimed to bring in a total of $2.1 million at the gate. But how much of that $2.1 million came out of its own pocket?

The pay-per-view numbers will probably dictate whether or not the clothing company was able to keep its head above water. However, Affliction did what was necessary in order to put on a stellar debut event. And not all organizations, regardless of the genre, make a profit during their grand opening. The middle of the week has crept up like an unsuspecting left hook. As the weekend approaches, it is the EliteXC who is ready to throw the punches. So what did we learn after this weekend? One lesson is that Affliction is quite a formidable foe for the UFC. All in all, Affliction’s fight card was a better all-round event than UFC Fight Night 14. Perhaps Dana White should now be a little bit worried. Granted, mma does look better inside of a cage than in a ring. Nonetheless, the better fights did take place inside a ring on Saturday evening.

Celebrities crowded into the arena to watch Affliction: Banned, the crowd seemed more raucous and even the fighters had more notoriety than the UFC fighters who participated in UFC Fight Night 14. Also, the mere presence of Donald Trump should send a tremor of fear down White’s spine. And need we remind you, Megadeth was on hand to perform. How can anyone expect to compete with that?

Notwithstanding the appearance of the leftover metal band from the eighties, Affliction did a stupendous job of hanging in with the elite mma organization during its first ever event. Sherdog has more on the promising young rookie better known as Affliction.

During this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 14, the UFC was guilty of putting on a couple of fights that were nothing more than a fraud. First off, the Brandon Vera vs. Reese Andy match proved that was unworthy of being on the main card, let alone second to the main event. Prior to the fight, Vera shot off at the mouth about how he was robbed in his last fight in the heavyweight division. Furthermore, he went on to say how many great things he’ll do in the light heavyweight division.

Both of those statements already seem to be a fraud. His hug-fest against Reese Andy drew boo after boo as Vera seemed so spent, he could barely last the three rounds. And Andyy was no better, but did anyone really expect him to be?

So what lies ahead for “the truth”? A class of light heavyweights that won’t be content with hugging him for fifteen minutes. If Vera hopes to make good on all the talk he dished out prior to the fight, he needs to work on his conditioning in a major way. Read more…
