An Afflcition-UFC war could benefit fans
The battleground has been already been set for this coming Saturday night. During its first ever live event, Affliction will go toe to toe with the UFC. It may be only one battle but, considering all the pre-fight activity, it may be a battle that turns into a larger war.
It is obvious that there is no love lost between the two organizations. UFC President Dana White has come out and publicly denounced the clothing company. In turn, Affliction president Tome Atencio has played a more passive-aggressive role and even went as far as to insinuate the two organizations could work together in the future. That simple statement may have just been enough to make White’s blood boil.
The way these two have gone back and forth bear an eerie resemblance to the way leaders politic before the start of a conflict. Atencio has even gone as far as to call in a four-star general in the form of Donald Trump. And Trump has plenty of artillery to give White all he could handle.
If in fact these two organizations do wind up declaring war on one another, the fans are the one who stand to benefit the most. With each organization trying to mount its adversary’s list of casualties, they will both try to continually outdo one another.
That means more fights, more action and more top quality events. Neither organization will be able to cut corners with the threat of a hostile takeover constantly looming. Once a month pay-per-view events could turn into bi-monthly affairs. Perhaps, dare we say, another free monthly extravaganza for the television audience!
There is an old saying that all is fair in love and war. To whatever lengths each organization goes, it is certain that mma fans will determine that length a fair one. And with the fans having a realistic say in who wins this war, the mma audience could be in for quite a treat. While both White or Atencio stand to lose quite a bit, mma fans stand to gain the most. If this battle does turn into an all out war, there could be a lot more action, a lot more often. And it’s quite certain that it won’t be the fans who help either organization raise a white flag.
