Afterthoughts from EliteXC: Unfinished Business
All in all, EliteXC put on fairly decent show last night. Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith finally settled things in the cage and the women came to play once again. Kimbo Slice was on hand but didn’t do anything to sully the name of the sport like he did during EliteXC’s last national television broadcast. Here’s a few afterthoughts from the Unfinished Business.
Quick with the stretcher
After Antonio Silva laid out Justin Eilers, the medical crew rushed a stretcher into the cage rather quickly. Eilers was down but not really out and it might have been a bit premature.
The Worst of…
Nick Thompson undeniably won the award for the worst beard of the night. Thomas Denny came in a close second, but Denny did managed to display the worst haircut of the evening.
Elite Company
Rafael Feijao has some elite company tutoring him along the way, training alongside mma greats Anderson Silva and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He’ll be one of the young fighters to watch in the future. He made it look easy in his first round knockout against Travis Galbraith as Silva looked on.
Cageside
Gina Corano and Kimbo Slice were both cage-side and obviously in to tall he action. Both spent a great deal of time on their feet over the course of the night, showing a lot of emotion during the fights. However, Carano looked a lot better doing it.
Come on Jake
Jake Shields didn’t need very long to claim the welterweight title with a quick win over Nick Thompson. After the fight, Shields claimed he would like to fight the winner of the Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch fight to unify the belts. It’s a nice sentiment, but come on Jake. Nick Thompson is no GSP.
Too long of a lull
Perhaps the higher-ups at Elite XC should have thought of the possibility of the fights not lasting very long? The lull between the Nick Diaz fight and the Smith-Lawler match-up seemed to drag on. It actually hurt the momentum that was created earlier in the night.
I agree on the lull between fights. they could have easily aired Stockon native David Douglas’s 12 second K.O. over Chute Box fighter Marlon Mathias, or maybe even shop a highlight reel from the all the preliminary fights. I would have loved to see some of the action from the bloody as can be fight between Brandon Tarns and Drew Montgomery or the Slam K.O. by Carl Suemanutafa over Mike Cook. Good news is CBS is getting better and seems to be listening to the fans. If they keep improving, we’ll end up with another free quality show.
