Affliction Predictions

July 19th, 2008

Everyone has their own take on how all the action will unfold at tonight’s Affliction: Banned. But as it always happens, even the foremost experts prove themselves to be wrong. We’ll take a minute to look into our crystal ball and try to predict what the future will bring.

Fedor Emelianenko (230) vs. Tim Sylvia (263)
Sylvia puts in a game effort but cannot do enough to best mma’s most dangerous heavyweight. “The Last Emperor” submits “The Maniac” early in the third round as fans will once again crown Sylvia, ‘one of the most boring fighters in the sport’.

Andrei Arlovski (241) vs. Ben Rothwell (264)
This should be one of the more intriguing bouts of the night. Rothwell wins if the fighters stay on their feet while Arlovski will win a battle on the ground. This time out, Arlovski submits “Big Ben” for the first time in Rothwell’s career midway through the third round.

Josh Barnett (256) vs. Pedro Rizzo (242)
The rematch will probably not be as good as the original. Expect Barnett to be at the top of his game and start to gain a growing advantage from the outset. Rizzo will hang in, but will have trouble lasting past the second round. The ref will stop this one before round three and raise Barnett’s hand in the air.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral (201) vs. Mike Whitehead (206)
Babulu is very anxious to get back into the ring and right his past wrongs. This is an interesting match-up and should see momentum shift back and forth. Babulu will win this see-saw battle by a decision, albeit a close one.

Matt Lindland (185) vs. Fabio Nascimento (185)
Lindland is still angry about his recent layoff that he attributed to BoDog and he is looking to take it out on somebody. It looks like Fabio will be that somebody. Lindland wins via submission before the first round is through.

Edwin Dewees (205) vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (205)
Dewees shouldn’t expect to see round two. Nogueira won’t even permit Dewees to hang around for a while as he will win by submission in the first round. If there is a lock of the night, this is it.

J.J. Ambrose (170) vs. Mike Pyle (171)
This is the coin-flip fight of the night. It could go either way even though Pyle is better at submitting his opponents. Heads we say Ambrose, tales we say Pyle. It looks like it’s tales as Pyle wins. Now, whether he wins by decision or sunbmission is another coin flip altogether. Heads submission, tales decision…you choose.

Ray Lazama (186) vs. Justin Levens (189)
Levens couldn’t make weight and he probably won’t be able to snatch a victory either. We’ll say Lazama wins via 2nd round KO on the grounds that Levens couldn’t even be successful at the scales.

Vitor Belfort (185) vs. Terry Martin (185.5)
This fight should see a lot of stalemates and a lot of resting. The older guys might even hear their share of boos throughout the fight. In the end, Martin wins a decsision in what could tturn out to be a very lackluster fight.

Mark Hominick (144) vs. Savant Young (145)
Young’s wrestling abilitites should be too much to handle for Homnick. Unless Homnick can land a devastating knockout blow, this one will end with him tapping out. Young wins by submission in the second round.
