As the popularity of mixed martial arts continues to heighten, new organizations are continuing to sprout up and take advantage of the growing interest that is spreading across the country. Some of those organizations will make admirable attempts at legitimizing the sport while others will fall drastically short.

Nevertheless, the bar has already been set by the UFC. And, like him or not, UFC President Dana White is one of the main reasons the sport has made it to where it is today.

Affliction is the latest organization to make an attempt at stepping into the cage against White and company. Affliction has managed to put together a mildly intriguing fight card for its first big event which will take place July 19th in Anaheim, California. Ticket prices for the event range from $50-$1000 and, according to Affliction sources, sales are already soaring.

The event will also be available on pay per-view for a mere $39.95. Inflating prices in the organization’s debut may be a bit risky as it now must deliver a night of quality mma action. Failure to do so would surely instill a negative feeling into the Affliction audience. It would also result in a small amount of repeat business.

Trading Punches

In an attempt to trade blows with the UFC, Affliction has signed a couple of fighters for its main event which it hopes will put on a quality performance. Former Pride heavyweight champion Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko will square off against former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia.

While Sylvia may not have been the most revered champion in UFC history, there is no denying the fact that he was the champion, even if it was just for a brief time. And Fedor’s reputation of being one of the world’s most dangerous heavyweights has not come courtesy of hype. With an overall record of 27-1, Fedor is a force to be reckoned with, regardless of which cage he steps into. Beyond that, there is not a whole lot to boast about on the fight card.

For the event, Affliction also grabbed some more fighters with UFC fights on their resume. There will be four other matches on the undercard. The mostly highly touted of them features Josh “The Baby Faced Assassin” Barnett (21-5) as he takes on Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo (16-7).

A Knockout Shot

The fight will come more than seven years after Rizzo knocked out Barnett while both were fighting in the UFC. That loss was Barnett’s only defeat in his seven-fight UFC history. However, Barnett has not fought inside the UFC octagon for over five years. Perhaps Affliction is just reaching into an older bag that was discarded long ago by Dana White. Rizzo has a formidable 9-5 record in the UFC with two of those losses coming courtesy of Randy Couture. Yet, since parting from the UFC at the tail end of 2003, Rizzo is a mere 2-2.

Perhaps a Barnett-Rizzo grudge match would have been more alluring if it took place five years ago. For the sake of Affliction, the pair hopes to recapture some of the swagger they carried with them just after the turn of the century. Yet, the Barnett-Rizzo match-up is just another reason why no organizations can compete with the UFC.

White is able to sign fighters when they are at the top of their game. Fighters masquerading in lesser known organizations may bring with them some impressive resumes, however resumes are nothing more than a history of the past. So while organizations like Affliction hope that the UFC fighters of yesterday will help them produce a half decent product, White is busy signing fighters who will usher in an exciting tomorrow.

Already Absorbing Blows

In light of Affliction’s latest event, its line of clothing is now banned from appearing inside the UFC octagon. It is also likely that Affliction fighters won’t get much consideration from White in the future if they attempt to maneuver their way back to the UFC. Making clothes is a lot different from promoting a fight. And now that Affliction has UFC for an opponent, it may turn out to be much more difficult than the organization originally perceived.

To counter the Affliction event, White is in the midst of scheduling a UFC fight card to coincide with the July 19th event. Furthermore, he has the leverage do inflict a significant amount of damage to the Affliction debut. While it is good for the sport to have fight leagues other than the UFC, none can compete on the same stage or expect the same following.

It has taken White a long time to build an elite organization and it is foolish for other organizations to think they can compete with the UFC after only a matter of months. For no matter which organization tries to trade blows with the UFC, the results will always be the same. For the most part, the fighters who win today in these new organizations will be simply be nothing more than the UFC victors of yesterday.

Anderson Silva

I had mentioned yesterday that word was the UFC was planning on an Ultimate Fight Night show (on free tv) to go against the premiere Affliction event planned on the exact same night, July 19th. It’s now official. You may think it’s a sneaky and slimy thing for the UFC to do… after all, a lot of people who may have been thinking about buying the Affliction Pay Per View event will be lured away by a free show on Spike instead… but you can’t deny the genius of the movie either.

Bolstering that free card, is the main event will include arguably the best pound for pound fighter in the world, Anderson Silva. That’s great, but here’s the catch. Anderson won’t be defending his middleweight title. As a matter of fact, he won’t even be fighting in the middleweight division. For the July 19th show, Anderson is moving up to light heavyweight to take on James Irvin who just recently set a new quickest knock out record over Houston Alexander.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to see this fight and you can’t deny the logic of putting a name like Anderson Silva on the main event of a card meant to spoil the ratings of another promotion. But at the same time, I don’t like this.

Just recently I complained that the last UFC event was without a title fight, and in a promotion with 5 Champions, that is unacceptable. I also noted that we hadn’t seen Silva in a little while and observed he isn’t currently even scheduled to defend his title. Why not have Silva defend his title on Fight Night? I concede that there is currently no clear challenger for Silva in the middleweight division, but a champion defends his title. Granted, we’re not ready to see Silva v Franklin 3, but why not Yushin Okami? Why not Michael Bisping?

Why have Silva fight in a contest that means absolutely nothing? If he wins… who cares? It wasn’t even a title fight. If he loses… who cares? His middleweight title wasn’t on the line. No, a Silva v Bisping fight for the title doesn’t make the most sense in the world, but it makes a LOT more sense then having your trophy boy in the middleweight division fighting outside his weight class in a fight that means absolutely ZERO.

I love this move by the UFC to have an event on the 19th, but I also think they dropped the ball with this main event. By the way, Silva is still not scheduled to defend his title again any time soon.

Affliction

It was with a degree of surprise (although not too much) that Affliction (up until recently just a harmless manufacturer of MMA wear under its own lable) announced it was entering into the MMA fight promotion game in direct competition with UFC. As most of you know by now, UFC responded by banning its fighters from wearing any Affliction apparel wear… which prompted Affliction to name its very first card “Affliction: Banned” (not a bad move actually).

But the card has more than just a title that snubs the UFC. The main event of the evening on July 19th not only features the mighty Fedor… but also a recent departees Tim Sylvia and Andre Arlovski. So what do you do if you’re the UFC? Well… snub them right back and put a fairly big card on free TV on at the exact same time Affliction is debuting their show.

The good folks over at MMA Junkie give us this:

The UFC has begun preparations to host a live fight event on Spike TV on July 19, the same night that the upstart Affliction promotion hosts its first pay-per-view event, Sherdog.com reports. According to the report, the event could feature a light heavyweight main event between Wanderlei Silva and former heavyweight Brandon Vera, and it’s expected to take place in Las Vegas.

What a giant kick in the groin that would be to the fledgling new MMA brand!

Now I’ve got to say that unlike EliteXC, this Affliction cared looks fantastic from top to bottom and I’m more than a little interested in seeing it… but if UFC actually does move ahead and puts a Wanderlei Silva on free TV at the same time… it will be harsh for Affliction. Would the move be cruel? Yup. Done almost just out of spite? Certainly. But it’s business baby, and you do what you need to do.

The old guys just didn’t have enough to make the night very competitive in Honolulu during EliteXC’s latest attempt to legitimize their organization in the world of mixed martial arts. In each of the five televised bouts, a thirty plus year-old fighter failed miserably against a younger, stronger opponent. Whoever scheduled this fight card should have done a bit more homework.

Only one of the five televised matches lasted beyond the first round. Actually, all four of those bouts were stopped before the first round even reached its halfway point. And it wasn’t that the victorious fighters were even that good. It was just that they were pitted against much weaker and less capable opponents. In fact, Nick Diaz was probably the best of all the winning fighters on the night. Yet, it took Diaz over thirteen minutes to finally finish off his elderly opponent.

Although Diaz’s fight was not the main event of the evening, he was arguably the best fighter on the card. He picked apart a defensive Mushin Corbbrey and finally dismantled his thirty year-old opponent more than halfway through the third round. Corbbrey put up a formidable defense for a while, but really had nothing to offer offensively. Nevertheless, Diaz was forced to use a variety of different tactics which led to a more intriguing contest.

Following the Diaz fight, KJ Noons defended his lightweight championship against Yves Edwards who was not a very game opponent to say the least. The thirty-one year old Edwards carried a glass jaw into the cage and couldn’t even last a minute against Noons. He felt the wrath of a Noons thirty seconds into the fight and simply couldn’t recover.

Title fights should last longer than the 47 seconds it took Noons to flatten Edwards. Apparently, the thug part of the thugjitsu that Edwards practices must have went to the wrong Hawaiian island.

The other three fights on the undercard were also mismatches of a very poor nature. In the night’s first bout, thirty-seven year old Wayne Cole looked as if he didn’t even want to be in the cage. The younger Rafael Feijao only needed 2 minutes and 48 seconds to send his aged opponent stumbling back to the locker room.

Things didn’t get any better when 42 year-old Ron Waterman stepped out of the old folk’s home and took a quick beating from Dave “Pee Wee” Herman. The twenty-five year old Herman upped his mma record to 11-0 and left people scratching their heads as to why the EliteXC couldn’t find a better opponent. There was 2 minutes and 41 seconds remaining in the first round when the referee had to pull Herman off a battered Waterman.

The final old guy to prove he wasn’t getting any younger was thirty-five year-old Tony Bonello. Bonello brought in an mma record of 16-0-1 with 14 of those wins coming by submission. After watching Murilo Rua dispose of him in a little over three minutes, one would have to question who Bonello actually defeated.

Perhaps part of that record dated back to Bonello’s high school wrestling days because when Bonello went to his back he looked like a novice. It was almost like watching a bully pick on a defenseless kid in the schoolyard, only the defenseless kid in this case was seven years older than the bully.

The action didn’t get any better when announcer Bill Goldberg tried to interview Nick Diaz and KJ Noons inside the cage following the Noons fight. The two exchanged words and then proceeded to go after one another in something that looked better suited for the WWE.

Aside from the Diaz fight, there was only nine minutes of mixed martial arts action on the latest EliteXC television event. The organization did a very poor job of following up the Kimbo Slice debacle from a couple of weeks ago. However, the biggest mistake was made when these fights were scheduled.

Basically, a bunch of fighters who were past their prime came out and showed they were still capable of taking a quick beating. Most of the time, the action looked more like street fights than mixed martial arts contests.

The EliteXC does have some talented fighters, but as it showed on Saturday night, those talented fighters are far and few between. And if they continue to dig up television events similar to the previous two, a lot of people are going to start changing the channel. Every month, it seems as though the EliteXC is not helping, but rather hurting the sport of mixed martial arts.

EliteXC Goes For Redemption This Saturday night, EliteXC will hold its first live event since the Kimbo Slice extravaganza that took place just two weeks ago. The event will take place in Honululu, Hawaii and will be televised live on Showtime. The cable audience will not be as widespread as the national televison audience that watched the May 31st event. In the past, the Showtime fight cards have been a positive for both the EliteXC as well as the sport. For whenever the bouts air on Showtime, there was significantly less fanfare than was seen on CBS. The organizatioin did without the elongated breaks or the elaborate entrances. It was simply a fight card featuring the main component everyone came to see, actual fighting.

EliteXC has entitled the event “Return of the King.’ It is a title in reference to the return of Hawaiian born lightweight champion KJ Noons. Noons will be defending his title in a main event bout against challenger Yves Edwards. The 24 year-old Noons brings in a 6-2 mma record and is also a very potent striker with an extensive boxing background. Edwards, on the other hand, carries with him a more seasoned career. During his career, the 31 year-old Edwards’ style of “thugjitsu” has enabled him to rack up a recrod of 31-13-1. His self-created style of thugjitsu is a combination of striking and grappling. Yet, that unique style may have ultimately hindered Edwards more than it has helped him.

Once one of the more promising fighters in the sport, Edwards continued to delve deeper into this world of thugjitsu. Perhaps a concentration on a more traditional fighting approach could have turned some of his defeats into victories. Edwards defines thugjitsu as finding a weakness in your opponent and exploiting it. That simple fact is basically one of the main ideas behind the entire sport of mixed martial arts. So such a philospohy may be preached moreso for just hype and notoriety. In fact, Edwards could be a victim of his own desire for the spotlight. Instead of concentrating on simply taking care of his business on the mat, Edwards contiuanlly shoots off about his style of thugjitsu. In all actuality, the word thug should have no placed in the world of mixed martiual arts. Mixed martial arts is a discipline that takes hard work, dedication and perserveance. A thug should have no real place inside the cage. Edwards’ devotion to the concept of thugjitsu could be one of the reasons he has wound up on the losing end thirteen times throughout his career.

Nevertheless, Noons will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to retain his title. Simply because Edwards has been handed thirteen defeats, doesn’t negate the fact that he is still a very dangerous fighter. Noons is much less experienced and has a very different fighting style. He will have the home crowd in his corner, but it will be a much more bitter defeat if the thug is able to come out and maximixe his own fighting style.

Another intriguing bout will be a lightweight match up between Nick Diaz and Mushin Corbbrey. Diaz is arguably one of the top fighters in the entire EliteXC and his record of 16-7 is a bit deceiving. He has only lost twice by knockout, one of which came by the hand of KJ Noons. The referee opted to stop the fight after the first round because of a cut above Diaz’s eye. A furious Diaz then left the cage feeling as though the referee made a rash decision. Three of Diaz’s defeats also came courtesy of some rather formidable opponents. While fighting in the UFC, Diaz lost decisons to Sean Sherk, Karo Parisyan and Joe Riggs. However, those losses came when Diaz was no older than the age of twenty-two. Now, at the ripe old age of twenty-four, Diaz has still yet to peak as a fighter.

If lady luck starts to deal Diaz a better hand and if he can continue to progress, Diaz could very well turn out to be one of the top mma fighters of the future. Before every great champion can taste the sweet victory that comes from being on top, they must all learn the misery of defeat. Diaz has learned that lesson and since his loss two Sherk more than two years ago, he has lost only one of his last seven fights. That loss was the questionable stoppage that came against Noons.

On Saturday, Diaz will be looking to make it seven out of his last eight against Corbbrey. It will defintely be a step up in class for the 8-2 Corbbrey who will be participating in his third EliteXC fight. Corbrrey emerged victorious in his previous two EliteXC bouts, although each was against a much lesser opponent. Corbbrey will have to be at his very best if he has any hopes of pulling off an upset against Diaz.

The other three fights on the undercard will feature Murilo “Ninja” Rua vs. Tony Bonello in a match up of middlewerights. Light heavyweights Rafael Feijao and Wayne Cole will also mix it up while
Dave “Pee Wee” Herman takes on veteran Ron Waterman in a clash of heavyweights. The event was originally supposed to feature a main event between Jake Shields and Drew Fickett for the first-ever EliteXC welterweight title. However, the bout was canceled because of an injury suffered by Fickett.

This weekend’s fight card will not only be an opportuniy for fighters like Diaz and Noons to heighten their prominence in the sport, but it will also be a chance for the EliteXC to get back in good standing with mma fans. The Return of the King should be appropriately titled “A chance for redemption” as the EliteXC will get back to basics and feature some quality young fighters doing battle. That fact alone should be enough to carry the sport of mixed martial arts no matter which organization sponsors the fight.

More and more during the modern era, women are stepping onto stages once dominated by men. The world of sports is no exception. A few extraordinary women have made recent footprints through sporting world. Those footprints have not only brought these female athletes to the forefront, but they have also paved the way for the female athletes of tomorrow. Mixed martial arts is just the latest sport to experience the revolution of the female athlete.

That revolutionary experience was hoisted up on center stage during EliteXC’s recent fight card seen on national television. Gina Carano put on an explosive performance when she defeated Kaitlin Young in a May 31st bout that the referee called after the second round. It was arguably the most exciting bout of the night. Where the male fighters failed to deliver, the women picked up the slack.

However, EliteXC will not be able to follow up with another exciting women’s match-up on its next fight card which will take place on June 14th. Carina Damm was scheduled to fight Debi Purcell, but was suspended for a year after testing positive for steroids. EliteXC never replaced Damm, opting to go with an all male fight card.

Now that Purcell is left without a fight, the possibilities of a future opponent are rather entertaining. An upcoming Purcell-Carano bout could prove to be a huge draw. It may not be a main event, but would definitely garner a significant amount of interest. Only five pounds separate the two fighters, but a common ground could surely be reached. While Carano may have the advantage of youth, Purcell is relentless. The two could prove to set a torrid pace that could dazzle spectators. Plenty of male fighters have come out and set similar paces in knock-down, drag-out dogfights. Yet, there is something special about watching a woman perfect a rear naked choke, no pun intended.

That doesn’t imply that women’s mixed martial arts is simply a novelty. It has just yet to be promoted anywhere near a high level. It is quite possible that Carano could be the one who brings women’s MMA into the limelight. Danica Patrick has sent the racing world into a frenzy with her recent success. When Patrick first came onto the scene, many focused on her vanity as opposed to her ability to handle a race car. But the focus shifted with the more success that came her way. The attractive Carano could very well find herself speeding down the same path as Patrick. Not only is she easy on the eyes, she is quite capable of handling herself in the cage.

Carano could wind up being one of the main draws in the EliteXC as female mixed martial arts has yet to make its way into the UFC or the WEC. Both are the top two avenues for mixed martial arts and yet only testosterone emanates from both the cage and the octagon. The WEC does have their own girls, however their lone job is to hold up cards with the number of the round written on it. Both organizations still manage to produce quality fights and each fight card has its share of diversity. Different styles of fighting and various weight classes offer a tremendous amount of variety. Adding women to the fight card would only enhance that diversity.

The next televised women’s MMA fight will take place on June 20th when UK Thai Boxing Champion Julie Kitchen takes on WIKBA World Muay Thai champion and number one female Muay Thai fighter, Germaine de Randamie of Holland. The event has been dubbed The International Muay Thai Champion of Champions Fight Night and it will take place in Montego Bay, Jamaica. All the action will be able to be seen live on-line via pay per view. That is hardly a stage as widely recognized than the UFC or even the WEC for that matter. And each woman is far from being a household name.

The Elite XC has made its share of mistakes in its attempt to bring mixed martial arts to the masses. Nevertheless, it cannot be criticized for its revolutionary use of women in the sport. Women are proving all over the sports world that they can compete with men. Even before Patrick made headlines for her performance on the race track, Annika Sorenstam teed up against the men on the PGA tour. Women are constantly revolutionizing sports and now it may be up to another female to bring that revolution to the world of MMA.

As of now, it looks as though Carano may be the most viable candidate to take over that role. But before women can establish themselves in the world of MMA, there must first be some consistency. That leaves fight promoters with the task of providing quality opponents. In the ever blossoming world of mixed martial arts, new fight venues and events are popping up by the day. The talent is out there, it just needs to be brought to the forefront.

So while a Carano-Purcell match up may just be speculation, it is an example of what could be. In the future, there could be a lot more candidates to throw into the mix. And while women may not be ready to headline an major MMA event, they are definitely ready to make it worthwhile. Just ask the EliteXC and their internet street fighter who recently made a mockery of the sport.

A number of parties have leaked the big news that is allegedly the UFC’s “huge” announcement, which has been rumored ever since Dana White discussed the matter to ESPN last week. Apparently, the announcement was to be that the UFC was able to get mixed martial arts sanctioned in the state of New York. The problem? Things didn’t exactly go according to plan, and so a whole new batch of drama can now begin. Sam Caplan breaks it down with the scoop:

“Fiveouncespain was informed by an anonymous source earlier this afternoon that the committee for Tourism, Arts, and Sports Development of New York held a vote on Wednesday to decide whether the state should regulate Mixed Martial Arts. According to the source, the bill was voted down in overwhelming fashion.

This web site has also learned that the possible legalization of Mixed Martial Arts in the state of New York was the planned announcement that UFC president Dana White had hinted at during an interview that was published on ESPN.com last week.”

The article adds that the bill in question still has a chance of being passed, keeping Dana Whites delayed mega-announcement a possibility:

“The bill was not passed in large part because of opposition from both sides. However, according to our source, a republican committee member “picked up the bill” and applied pressure after the session to have the vote passed. In another unusual development, several committee members, primarily republican but also a few democrat, attempted to change their vote.

Because of the attempt to change votes, it was decided that the bill will be placed on the agenda again early next week. Such a decision to put a bill back on the agenda so quickly after it had been voted down was described as “highly irregular.” As it stands, it’s still possible that White will be able to make his huge announcement as planned on Tuesday as there has been a major swing in support for the bill.”

Assuming all of this information is accurate, I cannot help but feel as if the news is a bit underwhelming. I hate to undersell the achievement because obtaining MMA sanctioning in New York opens up a lot of doors and is indeed great news for any mixed martial arts organization, but the now leaked announcement cannot even hold a candle to the the amount of hype which has been stirred up over the last week. One also has to wonder what Dana White will cook up in the event that the bill does not pass the second time around. Does he have a back up announcement in his pocket? Or will it just be a giant “sorry, we got ahead of ourselves” from the UFC’s favorite talking head. Only time will tell…

UPDATE: According to Dave Meltzer, obtaining MMA sanctioning in New York might not be the proposed “huge” announcement after all:

“Oliver Copp reported that Dana White denied to him and other reporters in London that the big surprise was going to be regulation in New York. He was openly talking about New York regulation to people. He also told Kevin Iole and Neil Davidson how it was something he has to tell his employees first, and obviously running MSG wouldn’t fit into that category.“

The ongoing question of the feasibility of other MMA organizations in the shadow of the UFC is about to get elevated. It looks like the International Fight League is in serious financial trouble and may be forced to declare bankruptcy soon. The folks over at MMA Junkie give us this:

The International Fight League has canceled its Aug. 15 event at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J., and warned investors that the company might be forced to protect itself from creditors. In an announcement today, the struggling league blamed the cancellation on its weakening financial condition and said it is continuing to seek ways of remaining in business.

There isn’t any doubt that the MMA world is richer with multiple fight organizations operating, rather than just a supreme UFC monopoly. However, the money required to lure top or second tier fighters into the various promotions is considerable… and it’s done in the hope that eventually they’ll be able to sustainabley afford it. This news of IFL sinking fast isn’t going to be the last we hear of.
